Pas de Deux Workshop

Broche Ballet is thrilled to present our first opportunity to learn partnering (pas de deux)! Pas de deux means “step for two” and consists of typically a male partnering a female on pointe with steps such as promenade (move in a circle), assisted pirouettes, and lifts such as the fish dive or overhead lifts.

Bring Your Own Partner (BYOP)!

BYOP — Bring Your Own Partner! They can be your friend, family member, partner, etc. Your partner does not need any ballet experience, nor do they need to be able to lift you up. You are welcome to bring a female partner with you as your partner, as long as they are comfortable learning the male role and rotating around partnering the other ladies.

For any partner that you bring, remember that we won’t be doing any lifts in this workshop so they don’t need to be physically strong enough to lift you, but we do recommend having them working on their upper body strength with exercises such as push-ups leading up to the workshop.

If you don’t have a partner or friend who you can rope into joining, we have spaces available for single Broche ladies who will be able to rotate with the partners in the workshop.

  • Ladies: En pointe and able to stand on one leg on pointe for a prolonged period of time. Since you’ll be partnered, you don’t necessarily need to be able to balance on your own, but you’ll want to be comfortable on one leg.

  • Gentlemen: No ballet experience required. You do not need to be able to lift your partner, as we will not be doing lifts in this first workshop series.

What to expect from beginner partnering work

In your first partnering classes, you and your partner must discover how to balance together. The partner in the male / supporting role learns how to know when the female dancer is on balance and where to place her weight over her toes. The female dancer learns the basics of holding her body to make her partner’s job possible. This is done through basic exercises on sou-sous and on one leg. From there, basic moves can be learned!

Watch the video below from an adult ballet studio recital (not Broche) from adult dancers showing their first partnering moves.
